I moved from California to Arizona with almost nothing—very little money, no safety net, and no real way to go back and forth to tour homes. The cost and time alone made that impossible. Like so many others trying to start over, I had to take a leap of faith. I signed a lease on a home I had never seen in person, trusting that it would be move-in ready for my family.

The first time I saw the house (aside from a few photos) was the day we arrived—with a full U-Haul, three exhausted kids, and everything we owned packed into that truck. I remember pulling up, hoping this was the beginning of something better for us. Instead, I walked into a nightmare. The home was dirty, the air thick with the smell of cigarettes and pet urine. It was nothing like what had been promised.

Before moving, I had specifically asked the management company if the home had been properly cleaned, especially the carpets. I was assured that it had. But standing there in that moment, it was clear that wasn’t true.

We had no backup plan. No extra money. No energy left to fight. Just three tired, hungry kids and a truck full of our lives waiting outside. As much as I wanted to turn around, demand answers, or just break down, I couldn’t. I had to be strong—for my husband, for my children. So instead, I rolled up my sleeves and started cleaning.

What followed were months of constant work. I left windows and doors open in the Arizona heat, trying to air out the smell. I scrubbed walls, cleaned every surface, and did everything I could day after day. When I could finally afford it, I had the carpets professionally cleaned—but even then, it took over six months of deep cleaning before the smell truly faded.

Looking back, I also realized something that made the experience even more frustrating. My lease listed a “Cleaning Fee ($0)” and an additional charge ($250) for cleaning after tenants vacate. I had assumed that meant the previous tenant had paid for the home to be properly sanitized before we moved in. But in reality, I had no way to prove anything or hold anyone accountable. At that point, survival and stability for my family mattered more than a fight I couldn’t afford.

That experience changed me. It opened my eyes to a gap that so many renters face—especially those relocating from far away with limited resources. No one should have to walk into a home blindly, hoping it matches what was promised.

That’s why I knew I had to do something.
